While I would be happy with Command & Conquer coming back in any significant way, I particularly would be happy with a new game in the Red Alert sub-series. Lastly, you couldn’t possibly get rid of the Empire of the Rising Sun after just one game but why not add another faction into the mix? And who else but Yuri’s psionic forces from the Yuri’s Revenge expansion pack? Having the Allies, Soviets, Empire, and Yuri all battling for world domination would be an awesome thing for Red Alert fans to see. The 3D visuals have always looked great and being able to build structures on the water really does add new strategies into the mix.

But I wouldn’t want them to ignore everything from Red Alert 3.

Putting a focus on speedy gameplay, where you find the best way to accumulate resources, build a well-defended base and eventually raise a mighty army would serve as both a nostalgic but timeless experience.

So what could make Red Alert 4 a success? What could EA and the development team do to bring the series back from the abyss? For starters – I would want them to forget almost everything from Red Alert 3 and use the excellent Red Alert 2 as the template for this new game. In short, Red Alert 3 is fine but it’s a pretty disappointing way to have the series end on.

And the multiplayer modes, while they don’t saddle you with a partner suffer from uninspired map designs that don’t let you use your forces to their full potential. Oh and there’s a whole new faction with the Empire of the Rising Sun led by none other than George Takei! So what’s the problem? Well, Red Alert 3 tries to shake up the formula by having the entire single-player campaign (all three of them) is focused on co-op gameplay, pairing you with a computer-controlled AI partner. The base building is awesome, the new units are great and new features like being able to build on water are great. Oh, it plays fine with all the elements that you want to see in a Command & Conquer game. It was Command & Conquer at its best… but it wouldn’t last.Ĭommand & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is… a divisive game. The gameplay in Red Alert 2 is buttery smooth and fast-paced, with many battles wrapping up fairly quickly. In short, it was a much more humorous and bizarre take on the genre that we were used to seeing and it played like a gem. Traditional military equipment like tanks, jets, and boats was joined by mind-controlled squids, teleporting troops, and giant, angry blimps. Gone was the semi-serious storyline from the first game and it was an over-the-top story of the Soviet Union trying to conquer the world. Everything was wilder and more off-kilter here. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 took everything from the first set of Command & Conquer games and turned it all up to 11. The game was a hit and ensured that Westwood Studios would be in the discussion of who crafted the best RTS games, all this at a time when games like Warcraft II and StarCraft were starting to emerge.Ī few laters later, in 2000, Westwood Studios dropped what is quite possibly their best work. The original Red Alert was released in 1996 and served as a prequel to Command & Conquer (the timeline is weird ok) and largely played in a similar way though with completely different units and factions and thus very different strategies to be played with. And while all three of these have their own reason to exist, it’s the battle between the Allied forces and the Soviet Union that stuck with us the most. There’s the mainline Tiberium saga, the one-off Generals timeline, and the Red Alert series. The Command & Conquer series as a whole is split into multiple sub-series. It’s time for Command & Conquer to come back with a bang. While it’s not as prolific as it was in the 1990s and 2000s, the series doesn’t seem to have been totally forgotten, so why does it feel like it does? Well, that’s probably because we haven’t gotten a full-fledged, new game in the series in over a decade. After a long hiatus following the release of Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight in 2010, we’ve since gotten a new mobile game with Command & Conquer: Rivals (which was meh) and Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection (which was amazing). Is Command & Conquer back or not? Seriously, I’m having a hard time telling if EA is actually interested in keeping the series relevant or now.
